Does Mushroom Coffee Taste Like Mushrooms?

The honest taste test: this is coffee first—not earthy, gritty wellness sludge.

A steaming cup of coffee beside an unbranded pouch on a linen-covered stone surface.

The first question I get about mushroom coffee is never subtle: “Okay, but does it taste like mushrooms?”

Fair. Completely fair. I have also looked at a wellness drink with a long ingredient list and wondered whether I was about to spend money on a mug of hot forest floor.

So here is the short answer, before we turn this into a whole thing: **not this one.** In my experience, Delish Mushroom Coffee tastes coffee-forward. It is not gritty. It is not earthy. It does not have that “I can tell this is good for me, unfortunately” taste that has made plenty of people give wellness coffee the side-eye.

It tastes like a warm, dark cup of coffee with its own character. Which is exactly where the bar should be.

I will not drink coffee that feels like a chore

I am all for making the things we already do work a little harder for us. That is the whole Simple Switches philosophy. But better still has to feel better. I am not adding an extra step, a weird texture, or a dirt-adjacent flavor to my morning in the name of being virtuous.

Coffee is already happening. It is the rare little ritual that many of us protect with our lives, even if we have to drink it in three cold installments. So if I am going to change it up, the replacement has to earn a place in the mug. It needs to be easy, it needs to taste good, and it needs to feel like something I actually want—not something I am trying to convince myself to want.

That is why this blend surprised me.

What's actually in the cup

Delish Mushroom Coffee is an instant coffee blend that includes chicory, inulin, and ten functional mushrooms. You can read the current label and product information for the exact ingredients and preparation details, but the important part for this conversation is the flavor experience: coffee and chicory lead the cup.

The mushrooms are there. They just are not shouting through a megaphone. I do not get a mushroomy, vegetal, or soil-like taste. I do not get grit at the bottom of the cup. I get a smooth, coffee-forward drink that fits naturally into the kind of morning ritual I already have.

That is my taste, obviously. I am not here to tell you that every person will experience it exactly the same way. But if you have been avoiding mushroom coffee because you picture something muddy, powdery, or aggressively earthy, that has not been my experience with this blend.

Make it like *your* coffee

Start with the current preparation directions, then make it the way you like to drink coffee. Black, with milk, with cream, in your favorite glass—there is no prize for making a new ritual feel unfamiliar. If a little milk makes it more enjoyable for you, add the milk. If you want a quiet minute with a pretty mug before the house gets loud, I support that deeply.

This is not a coffee purity test. It is a question of whether the ritual makes you feel good enough to keep it.

The better question is not “is it healthy?”

The better question is: **Would I actually make this again tomorrow?**

That is the Besty test. Does it make my life better enough that I want to keep using it? Not because it has a dramatic promise attached. Not because the internet says a woman with a color-coded supplement drawer is doing it. Because it tastes good, fits my life, and gives an ordinary moment a little more pleasure.

For me, the answer is yes. I like that it is easy. I like that it feels like coffee, not a project. I like that I can enjoy it without bracing for an earthy aftertaste or fishing powder out of my teeth. The bar may sound low, but apparently it is not always a given.

The Besty Verdict

If you want a cup that tastes like mushrooms, I cannot help you. But if you are mushroom-coffee curious and worried that it will be gritty, earthy, or vaguely swamp-adjacent, this is the one I would hand you first.

It is coffee first. It is smooth in my cup. And it proves that an everyday upgrade does not have to feel like a punishment to be worth keeping. Damn, okay.

Taste is personal, so treat my experience as a starting point—not a guarantee. If you have ingredient, allergy, medication, or health questions, review the product label and talk with a qualified professional.
